How To Throw A Front Kick

Striking Basics

THE BREAKDOWN

"One of the first things you want to learn about throwing a proper front kick is distance," says 6X Kickboxing World Champion, Gabriel Varga. There are several elements you must be aware before you kick, one of which is maintaining balance. Without balance, you will feel that you need to rush your decision — sacrificing your power and stability.

As Gabriel describes, shifting your weight to the ball of your foot while pivoting helps to maximize your balance. Also, leaning back while you're extending your leg provides slightly more distance and power to your kick. Practice and master the essential steps listed below.

Technique Overview

  • Proper distance outside jab range
  • Lift and chamber the kick
  • Standing foot pivots
  • Extend leg
  • Strike with the ball of your foot
  • Slightly lean back
  • Shuffle in for a lead front kick
